Load a channel through its web and it twists; move the load out to the shear centre and the twist disappears. This rig clamps a 450 mm aluminium 50 × 25 × 2 mm channel with a tip plate drilled at 11 positions on a 5 mm pitch. Two 0.01 mm dial gauges 100 mm apart give the twist, so students plot it against load position under weights up to 20 N.
