Free swell index is the quickest way to flag black cotton and other expansive soils. Two 10 g samples passing 425 µm settle for 24 h in 100 mL cylinders, one in distilled water and one in kerosene, read to 1 mL. The stand holds 10 cylinder pairs so a whole borehole can be screened at once.
