Long tunnels and shafts lose the surface azimuth, and a gyro theodolite recovers true north underground. The gyro unit finds azimuth to ±15″ in about 15 min, mounted on a 2″ theodolite and usable within ±75° latitude. Photoelectric tracking reads the gyro automatically, and one charge covers 4 orientations.
