Stiff clays and tills are often sampled by driving an open tube from a cable percussion rig. This U100 sampler takes 100 mm samples in a 450 mm tube with a screw-on hardened cutting shoe. The head has a ball check valve and vent holes, and plastic end caps seal the tube for transport.
