Dumpy and tilting levels have no compensator to fail, so they suit teaching labs where students must learn bubble levelling and adjustment by hand. We build a 30× internal-focusing dumpy with horizontal circle, a 20× student pattern, a 25× external-focusing brass instrument, a precise tilting level with coincidence bubble and a quickset level on a ball-and-socket head. Magnification, bubble sensitivity and syllabus needs decide the choice. Accuracy checks follow ISO 17123-2, and terms are as defined in ISO 9849.
