The pinhole test shows directly whether a clay erodes under seepage flow. Water passes through a 1.0 mm hole in a 35 × 38 mm compacted specimen at heads of 50, 180, 380 and 1020 mm. Flow is collected in graduated cylinders and the effluent colour is read to classify the clay.
