Outbreak strain typing and yeast chromosome work need fragments from about 10 kb to 5 Mb separated, which only pulsed fields can do. This CHEF system uses a 120° field angle, switch times from 0.1 s to 18 min and up to 6 V/cm. Gels are 14 x 13 cm or 20 x 20 cm in 2.0–2.5 L of buffer cooled to about 10–20 °C; runs last 18–48 h.
