Surface macrotexture drains water from the tyre contact patch and controls wet skid resistance at speed, so it is checked on new surfacing and during friction surveys. We supply manual sand patch kits, an electric sand spreader, a handheld laser texture meter, a circular track meter and an outflow meter. Speed of testing, whether results must be volumetric or profile-based, and site conditions decide the choice. Mean texture depth is measured under ASTM E965 or BS EN 13036-1, and mean profile depth under ISO 13473-1.

How to specify

Sand patch is the reference method; a laser meter is far quicker for many test points.
Order the correct glass beads or standard sand for your method, as grading affects results.
Testing must be done on dry, clean surfaces, so pack a stiff brush and windshield.
