When a spectrometer says iron is rising but not why, ferrography shows the particles themselves. A magnetic field of about 0.3–1 T lays debris of roughly 1–250 µm onto a slide in 10–15 min, ready for a 100× to 1000× bichromatic microscope. A camera of at least 5 MP records images, and direct reading gives large and small particle optical density.
