In soft clay, undisturbed sampling is difficult and lab strengths are often too low, so the field vane remains the standard way to measure undrained shear strength in place. We make hand-held vane testers for trial pits, mechanical and electric borehole vanes, push-in vanes with protection shoes and motorised units with a constant rotation rate. Clay strength, test depth and whether you need a recorded torque curve decide the choice. These testers follow ASTM D2573 and BS EN ISO 22476-9, with IS 4434 for Indian projects.
