Soft clays that sag when trimmed are best tested with a vane pushed into the sample. This unit inserts a 12.7 × 12.7 mm four-blade vane on a 100 mm rack-and-pinion and turns it through a hand-cranked worm gear. Four calibrated torsion springs cover about 1 to 100 kPa, read on a 1° scale.
