Very soft and sensitive clays can be hard to trim for compression tests, so the laboratory vane measures undrained strength directly in the tube or mould. We build a manual unit with calibrated torsion springs, a motorised version, a digital vane with torque sensor, an automatic PC-controlled system and a set of spare vane blades. Strength range and how much data you need to record drive the selection. Vane geometry and rotation rates follow ASTM D4648, BS 1377-7 and IS 2720 (Part 30).
